Dossier 01 / Home field

From the briefing table to the flight line.

Hangar Brief is a public school for unmanned aviation. We teach how drones are built, what they can do, how a pilot flies them from the ground, and what is changing in the drone world this season.

The language is the same one a wartime ferry pilot would recognize: lift, thrust, instruments, radio, and a clear picture of the ground. The airframes are new – carbon quads, long-wing scouts, first-person racers – but the problem is still flight.

What this station is for

01 / Airframe

How they are built

Frames, motors, flight controllers, packs, and the radio stack. We walk the parts the way a rigger once walked a wing: every fitting named, every load path explained.

Assemble a 5-inch

02 / Mission

What they can do

Inspection, mapping, racing, cinema, search, and long-endurance reconnaissance. A quad and a single-engine scout do different jobs, the way a fighter and a Wellington did.

Compare the types

03 / Signals

How to fly them

Sticks, modes, failsafe, and the video link that puts the pilot in the cockpit. Remote control is still radio – only the packets and the goggles changed.

04 / Dispatches

News from the field

New docks, wearable control stations, airspace tools, and the rules that decide which aircraft can fly. The briefing is current as of October 2026.

Airspace tools and test-lab rules

Versaterm is folding FAA LAANC requests into DroneSense so public-safety crews can ask for airspace without leaving the dispatch app. Separately, the FCC is due to vote on 29 October on ending recognition of mainland China test labs - a move that will not rewrite the existing foreign-drone covered list, but will change who can certify radios and cameras that still have a legal path.

Dock 4 and a 25-second battery swap

DJI's Dock 4 is the first of its docks to swap packs automatically instead of charging the aircraft on the pad. The company quotes 25 seconds for the swap and 45 seconds from landing to the next takeoff. The paired Matrice 5TD carries triple 50 MP cameras, thermal, lidar, and radar, with about 59 minutes on a pack. The hardware is not cleared for the US market under the current covered-list rules.

A control station you can wear

Neros Technologies cut its Archer FPV ground station by more than half and put Crossbow Block 2 on a plate carrier. Range stays near 25 km. The box now feeds low-latency video into ATAK so a pilot's picture can sit on the same map the rest of the unit already uses. It is a reminder that the radio room is shrinking toward the operator.

Why the wartime hangar

Old aviation, new airframes

Unmanned flight is not a break with aviation. Radio-controlled target drones flew in the Second World War. Reconnaissance cameras hung under wings long before they hung under carbon tubes. What changed is the gyro in your pocket: cheap inertial sensors, brushless motors, and digital radios turned a specialist craft into something a student can build on a kitchen table.

This site keeps both pictures in view. The briefing-room type, the roundel, and the paper dossiers are there because the ideas – trim, energy, radio discipline, a trustworthy instrument – still decide whether a flight ends on the wheels or in the hedge.
